A bespoke Highland Gilet arrived a few months ago and what a really great piece of clothing it is.
I am taller than average at 6ft 4in and still fairly slim, so being able to get made to measure outdoor clothing is a real rarity and a treat to wear.
Firstly, the quality of the cloth and the workmanship in tailoring the gilet is exceptional. All of the lining pieces are perfectly aligned, the buttons feel very solid and no hanging threads anywhere.
I love the big patch pockets ! By the time I’ve got car keys, phone, dog treats, penknife, sunnies, handkerchief etc etc I am ready to go and my trouser pockets are a lot more comfortable.
The cloth softens up with wearing over time and I have steam refreshed mine once which also helped.
It also looks very smart, I think it’s the scalloped hems that make the difference, looks so much less boxy than a straight line hem. The close fit and snug collar are part of the overall impression and it looks very good over a collar and tie (remember them ?). Worn to a few good pub lunches and received many compliments from both women and men. Spread the word about McNair.
Lastly, yes its very warm. Especially over a thin wool sweater when it’s a bit breezy, the wind blocking effect can really be felt and the temperature self-balancing miracle of wool keeps a comfortable warmth. I have also used in cooler weather as my main insulation layer under a shell jacket and it also performed very well then. Like wearing a thick fleece gilet but without the sweaty feeling after a bit of exercise.
All in all a really excellent piece of clothing and very pleased with it and highly recommended. Many thanks to the team.
